In June of 2009 at Gala Launch Event, Wayward Pen Foundation presented artworks of Urh Sobočan. One of Slovenia's most promising young artists, now living in Luxembourg, Europe.
Mr. Sobočan's wrok revolves around every day activities and situations we indulge in. In every each one of them he confronts us with ultimate disaster, capturing natural spaces and natural causes that draws the possibility for a complete misfortune and reminds us that the danger is right in front of us, thus induces the idea that ultimate fear is generated in every day life.
Inspired by: Cy Twombly, Kati Heck, Andrew Foster, Raymond Saunders.
In 2005 Urh Sobocan (1979, Ljubljana, Slovenia) completed his BA Visual Communication studies at the Academy of Fine arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia. From there on, he went on to join the Illustration core at the MA Communication design studies at the Central Saint MArtins College of Art and Design and completed the course with a distinction in 2007. During this time Urh developed a distinct visual language. Stylistically the work became dominated by mark-making and the visual emphasis is focusing on contrasting scale, color, materials and realistic drawing to descriptive line. Aside from working as an Editorial Illustrator, Urh initiated a project called "Recurrence" which merges traditional lace craft with contemporary Illustration. The themes tackle intimate subjects such as family, birth and death and todays perception of Slavs and Slav mythology in the Western World.
Note from the artist:
Modern society is based on the idea of constant progress, grades, kindergartens, schools, prettier lovers, better cars, greater careers, yet small cuts, bruises, spilled drinks, flat tyers all shout a warning that the world and our bodies are fragile, and I question if nature really strives a common goal with our minds.
